LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The No. 7 University of West Alabama women's tennis team picked up its 40th consecutive win in Gulf South Conference regular season play with a 7-0 shutout of the University of West Georgia, Saturday afternoon from the Vaughan Tennis Complex.
The Tigers go to 11-8 and 7-0 in the GSC, while the Wolves fall to 4-9 and 1-7.
"The girls competed well today and showed how strong we can be at every position no matter who is on court. We have a great team and we are getting better and looking forward to meet our goals," said assistant coach
Jose Bendeck.
UWA took the No. 1 and 3 spots in the doubles lineup to get out to a 1-0 lead.
Khim Iglupas and Valeninta Mutilba (3-1) bounced back from Thursday's loss against Christian Brothers to win on Saturday, 6-1.
Greta Zawels and
Shaira Rivera (2-0) edged Karla Menendez and Luna Mouton, 7-5.
It was a clean sweep at singles for UWA. Iglupas (14-1) earned her 10th straight victory with a straight-set dub at the top flight.
Mutilba (4-3) went into a third set, 10-point tiebreak after rallying to defeat Karla Menendez in the second set. It was all Mutilba in the break, cruising to the 10-4 win.
Since 2011, West Alabama is a perfect 14-0 against West Georgia in what could be the final match between two teams as UWG will make the move to NCAA Division I next season.
For West Alabama, it is the 40th consecutive win in regular season matches in the Gulf South Conference. The team's last setback came in 2020, and they are eyeing a fourth straight perfect GSC regular season with a 7-0 mark and three matches to go (Montevallo, Lee, Mississippi College).
The Tigers, since 2011, are 96-25 in GSC play and 76-8 in the
Jeff Beaman era.
West Alabama will hit the road on Tuesday afternoon for a match against Montevallo.
