Auburn Montgomery Walks off Softball in GSC Opening Round

OXFORD, Ala. - The University of West Alabama softball team fell to Auburn University in Montgomery 2-1 in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Championship on Wednesday afternoon from Choccolocco Park.

West Alabama falls to 33-17 on the season, while Auburn Montgomery moves up to 37-11.

Chloe Baynes got the AUM offense rolling in the first at-bat of the contest with a single through the left side. Baynes would then work her way to third base via a stolen base and advancement off a groundout.

Molly Cobb got the Warhawks on the board with an RBI sacrifice groundout to close out the first inning.

In the third inning, a Kori Young walk and Sara Fargo fielder's choice reach put West Alabama in scoring position.

Unfortunately for UWA, Goble put the opportunity to bed by striking out Mary Grace Sheffield for out number three.

Alanna Goble retired the first seven Tiger batters to keep the lower seed at bay through the first three innings.

With one out in the top of the fourth, Marissa Mitchell tied the contest up at one apiece with her 23rd home run of the season over the left field wall.

The West Alabama defense settled in to hold the stalemate at one through five innings with Madison Wright and company retired eight of the nine batters faced in the next two and a half innings.

Unfortunately for the Tigers comeback cause, a one out walk-off solo homer from Margaret Morgan gave AUM the 2-1 victory in the seventh.

Marissa Mitchell led the way with two hits and a solo home run.

West Alabama will face No. 6 seed Union in an elimination game at Choccolocco Park on Thursday morning at 10 a.m.
