Tigers Fall in GSC Semifinals to Argos, Await NCAA Selection Show

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's soccer team battled throughout but fell to top-seeded and undefeated West Florida, 2–0, in Thursday's Gulf South Conference Tournament semifinal at the John Hunt Soccer Complex.

With the loss, the Tigers move to 11-4-3 overall and will now wait to see if their résumé is strong enough to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament.

West Florida opened the scoring early in the 11th minute when Rece Grant volleyed a clearance just outside the box, sending a driven shot off Yumari Hernandez's hands and into the top-right corner for a 1–0 Argonaut lead.

UWA nearly answered midway through the first half with two quick chances from Selis Demirci, including a strike off the left post in the 21st minute. Moments later, Mikaela Carpino forced a diving save from UWF goalkeeper Belle Okoroafo, but the Tigers entered halftime trailing by one.

West Florida doubled its lead early in the second half when Mya Swinton dribbled from midfield into space and struck a low shot across the face of goal to make it 2–0 in the 50th minute.

Despite the deficit, the Tigers continued to push forward, generating seven total shots with four on target. Carpino and Aynzlie Nelson each threatened in the second half, but Okoroafo and the Argonaut defense held firm.

On the other end, Yumari Hernandez turned in another strong postseason performance, recording seven saves on 17 shots faced, including several difficult stops to keep the Tigers within reach.

The physical matchup featured 32 combined fouls and three yellow cards, with UWA earning second-half cautions to Holly Gillies and Aynzlie Nelson.

As the final whistle sounded, West Alabama's focus shifted to Monday's NCAA Selection Show. The Tigers entered the week ranked No. 7 in the South Region, just outside the top six that advance to the national tournament.

UWA now awaits word from the committee to see if their season will continue into the NCAA Tournament
