Tigers Host Statesmen in GSC Quarterfinals

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Postseason soccer is back at the UWA Soccer Field, as the No. 4 seed West Alabama women's soccer team will host the No. 5 seed Delta State in the Gulf South Conference Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday, November 8th, at 5:30 p.m. This marks the second meeting between the two teams this season, with the Tigers taking a 1-0 victory in Livingston during the regular season.

The Tigers enter the postseason with a 10-3-3 overall record and a 7-3-2 mark in GSC play, anchored by one of the top defensive units in the conference. Freshman goalkeeper Yumari Hernandez, a three-time GSC Goalkeeper of the Week, tied for the lead in the GSC in shutouts (10) and ranks second in goals allowed (9) and third in save percentage (.866). As a team, UWA has held opponents to just 0.56 goals per game, allowing the second fewest goals in the GSC this season.

Offensively, senior midfielder Selis Demirci leads the charge with 11 goals and 23 total points, both ranking near the top of the conference. She also leads the GSC with six game-winning goals, consistently providing clutch scoring for the Tigers. Supporting her are Bailee Fairley with two goals and two game-winners, and Aileen Charles, who has added a pair of assists from the midfield.

As a team, West Alabama averages 1.19 goals per match while holding opponents to 0.56, with a 0.432 shot-on-goal percentage and 73 total shots on target this season.

Delta State enters as the No. 5 seed with a 7-5-4 overall record (6-3-3 GSC), led by Millie Congerton, who has five goals and three game-winners on 52 shots. The Lady Statesmen are averaging 1.44 goals per game and rank among the top half of the league in offensive production. Goalkeeper Piper Burgess has been solid in net, allowing 16 goals with four shutouts and a 1.16 goals-against average.

In the regular-season matchup, Demirci scored the game's lone goal in the second half, while Hernandez recorded her eighth shutout of the season in the 1-0 win over Delta State.

Saturday's match will decide who advances to the GSC Tournament Semifinals to take on the winner of the 1-seed West Florida and 8-seed UAH matchup. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the Tigers as they look to continue their postseason run at home.
