LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Softball team defeated No. 2 Auburn Montgomery, 5-1, in Game One of their three-game series on Friday afternoon.
Off the strength of a Grand Slam from Marissa Mitchell and a Complete Game performance from Madison Wright, UWA (11-4, 4-0 GSC) handed second ranked AUM (8-3, 3-1 GSC) their first conference loss of the season.
Wright continued her stellar senior season on Friday as the lefty only allowed one run on four hits while striking out four in her 7.0 innings of work.
The Tigers' ace worked around a pair of walks through the first three innings, keeping a dangerous Auburn Montgomery lineup off the board before Mitchell and West Alabama's offense gave her run support in the bottom half of the third.
The bottom of the third began with Jessica Cross being hit by a pitch before an error from AUM and a walk drawn by Haley Shannon loaded up the bases for Mitchell. On an 0-1 count, the Tigers' second baseman hit a no-doubter to dead center to give UWA a commanding 4-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Auburn Montgomery responded with a solo home run that was hit by Rebecca Komers. That's all the Warhawks could muster up against Wright as she turned things over back to her offense in the bottom half.
With their lead now cut to three, Taylor Clegg and Trinity Hatcher got on base, bringing up Ella Watson who registered a sacrifice fly, scoring Clegg to put the Tigers back up by four.
Now working with a 5-1 advantage, Wright went back to work. The senior retired AUM's next six batters before closing the Warhawks out in the seventh to secure a Game One win.
Mitchell and Shannon recorded the lone hits for West Alabama while Clegg, Cross, and Rose all picked up runs.
West Alabama will conclude their series against Auburn Montgomery with a 1:00 p.m. double header on Saturday.
