LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Women's Tennis team began their conference slate with a 6-1 win over the Montevallo Falcons on Wednesday.
No. 12 West Alabama (2-1, 1-0 GSC) started fast, sweeping the doubles matches to secure the doubles point over Montevallo (1-2, 1-2 GSC). The superstar duo of Shaira Rivera/Valentina Mutilba breezed through their match, taking a 6-1 victory while Emiri Takanishi/Alexa Milliam and Ximena Ku/Greta Zawels secured the first point of the day with 6-3 and 6-4 wins, respectively.
In singles play, Rivera defeated Klara Podskubkova in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) while Mutilba was pushed to three sets by the Falcons' Claire Jaramba. Mutilba pulled out a (4-6, 6-3, 6-0) win to secure another point for the Tigers. Meanwhile in Line Three singles, freshman Alexa Milliam made quick work of Elena Ondobo, winning (6-2, 6-1).
On Line four, Takanishi went back-and-forth with Johanna Kullum before picking up a three-set win, (6-4, 3-6, 6-2).
To round things out, Greta Zawels picked up a win over Greta Vagnini on Line Five (6-3, 6-4).
West Alabama will be back in action this weekend for the GSC-Lonestar Crossover in Tyler, Texas.
