SAINT LEO, Fla. - The University of West Alabama Softball team split their Saturday double header against the Saint Leo Lions on Saturday, dropping Game One, 2-0, and bouncing back with a, 5-1, Game Two win.
West Alabama (5-4) struggled offensively in Game One as they only recorded three hits which led to Saint Leo's (5-3) win. In Game Two, the Tigers offense came alive late as a three-run seventh inning helped clinch a four-run win.
GAME ONE: Saint Leo 2, West Alabama 0
Madison Wright got the ball for UWA and pitched 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits before being replaced by Megan Roe who pitched 1.2 innings of no hit ball.Â
Wright got through the first two innings with little to no issues until the Lions opened up the scoring on Wright and the Tigers in the third. Saint Leo's Briana Neal began the inning with a lead-off triple and was driven home by Maddie Antico via an RBI-single.Â
Wright bounced back well as the senior finished the inning without further damage and went on to retire the Lions' side in the fourth. Down 1-0, with three innings remaining, UWA couldn't provide run support for the starting lefty. Haley Shannon and Marissa Mitchell were lone Tigers to record a hit while Saint Leo added another run in the fifth which proved to be enough as West Alabama fell, 2-0.
GAME TWO: West Alabama 5, Saint Leo 1
Eleanor De Block was in the circle for UWA in Game Two and surrendered a run in the first as Saint Leo's Sydney Cline singled home Neal to put West Alabama behind 1-0 early.
After allowing a run in the first, De Block really settled down and pitched a magnificent game but the Tigers still couldn't get anything going offensively, keeping the score at 1-0 until the sixth inning.Â
In the sixth, Shannon opening up the inning with a lead-off single which was followed by a walk from Mitchell, bringing up Stanbridge. Like she's done so well through the first two weeks of the season, Stanbridge came through with runners in scoring position as she drove in Shannon and Mitchell with a two-run double to put West Alabama ahead, 2-1. In the bottom half of the sixth, De Block allowed a lead-off double but worked her way out of the inning unscathed.
UWA tagged on a couple of insurance runs in the top of the seventh with Cara Rankin registering a sacrifice fly, Riley Sullivan collecting an RBI-Triple, and Mitchell recording an RBI-Single. Now up 5-1 and three outs away from a win, De Block finished the job in the bottom half to clinch a four-run road win for the Tigers.
De Block finished with a line of 7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 4 SO, 3 BB while Stanbridge led the way offensively with a game-high two RBIs.
West Alabama will conclude the weekend on Sunday after a double header against Florida Southern that's set for 12:00 p.m. CST/1:00 p.m. EST.
