LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Men's and Women's Tennis teams picked up dominant wins over the Delta State Statesmen on Wednesday with the Men winning 6-1 and the Women taking home a 7-0 decision.
West Alabama's Women's Team (6-3, 3-0 GSC) returned to full strength for Wednesday's matchup as the Tigers won all of their individual matches in straight sets while the Men's Team (3-7, 1-3 GSC) followed suit.
MEN'S TENNIS
UWA began the match, by sweeping the doubles point with the duos of Tomas Almeida/Afonso Portugal, Jacob Tapia/ Federico Iturbe, and Vilislav Bonev/Eita Ishikawa all handling their doubles match with relative ease.
In singles play, Portugal picked up a (6-3, 6-1) win in Line Two while Tapia only dropped one game in Line Three, winning (6-1, 6-0). In Line Five and Six, Almeida and Iturbe took care of their opposition, with Almeida taking home a (6-2, 6-2) decision and Iturbe claiming a (6-2, 6-1) victory.
To cap off a stellar afternoon, Bonev secured the final victory of the match, defeating the Statesmen's (2-7, 0-2 GSC) Andrej Komnenic (6-3, 7-5) in Line Four.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Similar to the Men's Team, the West Alabama Women swept doubles, with the duos of Shaira Rivera/Valentina Mutilba, Alexa Milliam/Emiri Takanishi, and Greta Zawels/Lolita Hukasian dominating their respective doubles matches.
A star trio has officially emerged in Lines One through Three for UWA with Rivera, Milliam, and Mutilba. The trio continued their greatness on Wednesday, by wrapping up their matches in straight sets. Rivera handled Line One, securing a (6-1, 6-0) victory while Milliam claimed a (6-2, 6-4) win. In Line Three, Mutilba picked up another win in straight sets, defeating Delta State's Yasmina Mayer, (6-1, 6-3).
To round out the Tigers, Takanishi picked up a (6-4, 6-2) win while both Hukasian and Zawels made quick work of their opponents in Lines Five and Six, winning (6-0, 6-1), respectively.
West Alabama will be back in action on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. for a double header against Valdosta State in Pensacola, Florida.
