Wright Dazzles in Tigers Road Sweep Against Cougars

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The University of West Alabama Softball team bounced back in a big way, sweeping the Columbus State Cougars on Tuesday afternoon, winning Game One, 3-2 and Game Two, 6-5.

West Alabama (16-12, 7-8 GSC) picked up a pair of road wins behind the arm of Madison Wright who won Game One and Saved Game Two, accumulating a pitching line of 8.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 12 SO, .375 WHIP against Columbus State (22-10, 3-3 PBC) on Tuesday.

GAME ONE: UWA 3, CSU 2
Wright got the start for the Tigers in Game One and was given a two-run lead before she stepped foot on the mound. To begin the day, Ella Watson hit her first career Home Run, putting West Alabama up 2-0 early. In the bottom half, Wright started her day, by retiring the Columbus State side in order, recording two of her season-high 11 strikeouts in the process.

After a smooth first inning, the Cougars pushed two runs across on Wright in the second as Anna Waites hit a two-run homer to tie the game at two. From that point on, Wright was untouchable on the mound, allowing just one hit after Waites' Home Run.

With Wright in a zone, UWA put the her in line for the win in the sixth as Watson scored off a CSU error to put the Tigers ahead 3-2.

West Alabama couldn't add any insurance runs in the seventh but they wouldn't need it as Wright slammed the door on the Cougars to secure a 3-2 win.

Wright finished with a line of 7.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 11 SO. Offensively, Watson accounted for all three of West Alabama's runs.

GAME TWO: UWA 6, CSU 5
Eleanor De Block received the ball in Game Two and quickly found herself in a deficit after two CSU runners scored off a UWA error. De Block remained composed in the inning and retired the side without allowing any more runs to cross, following that with a shutout inning in the second to keep the score at 2-0 in favor of the Cougars.

The Tigers got on the board in the third, with Taylor Clegg hitting her fifth Home Run of the year to cut West Alabama's deficit to one. In the bottom half, Columbus State responded with two runs as Aubrey Ussery and Abrianna Green both drove in runs to put UWA in a three-run hole.

Trailing 4-1 as the game progressed into the fourth, West Alabama found their groove. The Tigers put up a three spot in the fourth, with Jessica Rose and Sara Fargo collecting RBIs to knot the game at four.

After the tying the game, coach Defeo went to Megan Roe out of the bullpen. Roe retired the Cougars in order, turning things back over to her offense where West Alabama put the righty in line for the win.

To begin the Tigers' side, Clegg drew a lead off walk while Watson singled, putting two runners on with no outs. Two batters later, Riley Sullivan recorded a two-out, go-ahead, two-run double that propelled UWA to a 6-4 advantage. In the bottom half of the inning, Roe shut down the Cougars to send the game to sixth.

Roe continued to be excellent on the mound until the seventh inning. The junior found herself in a bit of trouble after two Tigers' errors put runners on first and second with no one out. Holly Lynn came to the plate and collected an RBI-single to make it a one-run game. With the game now in the balance, coach Defeo went to Wright out of the bullpen. The lefty produced a groundout, strikeout, and pop up to clinch the game for West Alabama, 6-5.

Clegg and Ann Marie Stanbridge both recorded multi hit games while Roe picked up her first career win and Wright picked up her first save of the year.

West Alabama will return home this weekend when they welcome the Delta State Statesmen for a three-game series at the UWA Softball Complex.
