LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Softball swept their series against Union on Saturday, defeating the Bulldogs, 11-2, in five innings in Game Three.
West Alabama (24-12, 13-8 GSC) got another solid start from Madison Wright coupled with another offensive outburst over Union (7-28, 5-15 GSC) to secure their 10th consecutive win.
The Bulldogs pushed across a run on Wright in the top of the first, giving the Tigers their first deficit of the series. UWA didn't trail for long as the their offense exploded for four runs in the bottom half.
Ann Marie Stanbridge, Marissa Mitchell, and Taylor Clegg all reached base to begin the inning, bringing up Ella Watson who scored Stanbridge via a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, Mitchell scored off a wild pitch before Riley Sullivan brought Clegg home with an RBI-single. Now up 3-1, West Alabama tacked on one more run as Haley Shannon drove in Sullivan courtesy of an RBI bunt single to put up a four spot in the opening frame for the Tigers.
Wright retired Union's side in order in the second and was given an even bigger cushion in the bottom half of the inning.Â
Making her first career start, Olivia McClain Payne worked a lead off walk before Stanbridge recorded a single. With runners on first and second, Clegg singled home Payne which was followed by a Bulldogs' error that scored two more West Alabama runs to extend their lead to 7-1. The Tigers weren't done in the inning as another Union error scored Sullivan and Watson to push UWA's lead out to eight runs.
Wright put together another solid inning of work in the third before her offense gave her even more run support in the bottom half. McClain began the inning by drawing another leadoff walk, setting the stage for Mitchell who hit her 10th Home Run of the year to catapult the Tigers to an 11-1 advantage.
In the fourth, Union pushed across a run to make it a nine-run game but nine runs would be way more than enough for UWA as Wright registered the final three outs in the fifth to secure an 11-2 run rule win for the Tigers.
Wright finished with a pitching line of 5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 SO. Offensively, Mitchell led the way with her Home Run and two RBIs while McClain reached base twice and scored a run in her first career start.
West Alabama will take their 10-game winning streak on the road next weekend for a three-game series against Trevecca Nazarene which is set to begin on Saturday
