Tigers Split Double Header Against Argonauts to Begin Series

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of West Alabama Softball Team split their double header against the West Florida Argonauts on Saturday, falling 1-0 in eight innings in Game One before bouncing back in Game Two with a 6-0 win.

Pitching was the calling card for UWA (26-15, 15-11 GSC) on Saturday as the duo of Madison Wright and Eleanor De Block held arguably the best offense in the GSC, in West Florida (28-12, 18-8 GSC), to one run through 15 innings of play.

GAME ONE: UWF 1, UWA 0
Wright got the start in Game One and continued her magnificent season in the circle. The lefty registered her 18th complete game of the year while striking out eight batters and allowing one run on seven hits.

The senior only allowed two base runners through the first three innings, keeping the score knotted at zero. In the third, Wright struck out Angelia Discenza which stands as the 500th strikeout of her illustrious career.

While Wright dazzled in the circle, the Tigers' bats struggled to get going as Ella Watson, Olivia McClain Payne, and Sara Fargo were the only UWA players to break into the hit column through the first five innings.

The pitchers' dual between West Alabama's Wright and West Florida's Haley Guffey continued into the seventh inning as both squads struggled to produce offensive production, leading to a scoreless game in the final frame.

In the seventh, Taylor Clegg singled but she would be the only base runner of the inning while Wright worked around a lead off hit in the bottom half to send the game into extra innings.

To begin the eighth, Jessica Rose hit a lead-off double, but the Tigers failed to bring her home to keep the score tied.

Hannah Harper won it for the Argonauts in the bottom half with a walk-off sacrifice to put UWA behind 1-0 in the series.

GAME TWO: UWA 6, UWF 0
Eleanor De Block got the ball for West Alabama in Game Two and similar to Wright, pitched a beauty.

Mitchell and the Tigers' offense put De Block in line for the win early as the senior drove in Trinity Hatcher with an RBI-single in the top of the first.

Two innings later, Hatcher hit her fourth Home Run of the season as the freshman sent a ball over the right field fence, propelling UWA to a 2-0 advantage.

Now working with a two-run lead, De Block continued her work on the mound but ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth. The Argonauts put runners on second and third with one out before Tigers' right-hander produced a pop-up and a fly-out to get out of the inning unscathed.

While De Block continued her mastery on the mound, West Alabama's offense exploded in the seventh inning, tacking on a a handful of insurance runs.

Mitchell got the party started in the final frame as the Second Baseman registered an RBI-single that scored Payne. Now up three, Ann Marie Stanbridge drew a bases loaded walk before Watson brought Clegg and Mitchell home with a two-run single.

The Tigers took their 6-0 lead into the bottom half where De Block put a stamp on her excellent performance as she retired the Argonauts' side in order to tie the series at one.

De Block secured her third complete game shutout of the year and finished with a line of 7.0 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 4 SO.

Mitchell led the way offensively with three hits and two RBIs while Hatcher and Rose followed suit with two a piece.

West Alabama will conclude their series against West Florida on Sunday with Game Three set for 1:00 p.m.
