LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Softball team picked up their eighth run-rule victory on Friday, after defeating the Lee Flames, 8-0, in six innings in Game One on Friday.
Behind the arm of Madison Wright and bat of Marissa Mitchell, UWA (28-15, 17-11 GSC) put together a complete performance on Friday to take Game One of their Three Game Series against Lee (22-23, 9-18 GSC).
Wright got the start for UWA and the Tigers gave their star lefty run support early on. After a shutout inning of work from Wright, the West Alabama bats went to work as Trinity Hatcher and Haley Shannon led off the Tigers' side with a leadoff singles. With two runners on and no one out, Lee's Natalie Pruitt Geesey worked around Mitchell, putting her on to load up the bases. Taylor Clegg then drew a bases loaded walk to get the Tigers on the board first.
Up 1-0, UWA created distance from Lee in the bottom of the second as a Jessica Rose, Hatcher, and Shannon all got on to load the bases for Mitchell. The Tigers' star Second Baseman belted a Grand Slam over the right center fence to extend West Alabama's lead to 5-0.
Working with a comfortable 5-0 lead, Wright retired the next six batters that she faced, sending us to the fifth inning.
Lee finally got a runner on in the fifth until Wright produced a pair of popups and a fly out to retire the side. The Tigers threatened to add onto their lead in the bottom half, but left runners stranded on second and third as the score remained 5-0 in favor of UWA.Â
West Alabama broke the game open in the sixth as Rose led off the inning with a single. Two batters later, Hatcher ripped a double down the left field line, scoring Rose to make it a six-run game. Moments later, the Flames began to struggle in the field, committing two errors that brought Hatcher home. Now with the bases loaded, Stanbridge came up to the plate and drove in the winning run with a sac fly to secure Game One for the Tigers.
Mitchell led the way with her Grand Slam while Hatcher and Shannon both recorded multi-hit games. On the mound, Wright pitched all six innings, allowing four hits while also striking out four.
