MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's tennis team closed out its 2025 campaign on Thursday afternoon, falling 4-0 to No. 2 seed and No. 1 ranked West Florida in the Gulf South Conference Quarterfinals at the O'Connor Tennis Center.
The Tigers (6-14) faced an uphill battle from the start against the nationally elite Argonauts (22-1), who entered the tournament as one of the top contenders. West Florida took control early by clinching the doubles point with convincing 6-1 wins at both the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. Court one went unfinished with UWF leading 4-2.
In singles play, West Florida continued to flex its depth and power. Miguel Cabrera cruised past Francisco Oliveira 6-0, 6-2 on court one to set the tone. Albin Ekenros followed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Tomas Almeida at No. 5, before Sebastian Sotelo delivered the clincher at No. 3 with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 result over Afonso Portugal.
The remaining three singles matches went unfinished, though UWA showed resilience across the board. Jacob Tapia had taken the opening set from Sebastian Rondon at No. 2 before play was halted, while Eita Ishikawa and Federico Iturbe each had their moments on courts four and six.
Despite the loss, the Tigers made a strong showing in the postseason, building experience and setting the stage for growth in the seasons to come.
