LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Softball team's GSC Tournament run came to an end on Thursday after a 1-0 loss to Montevallo.
West Alabama (30-19) got a great start out of Eleanor De Block but the Tigers offense couldn't give her any run support, resulting in their 1-0 extra inning loss to Montevallo (31-23).
De Block pitched the whole game for UWA, allowing just one run on four hits.
The junior got off to a rocky start as she dealt with control issues in the first two innings, walking two batters. Even while dishing out a pair of free bases, the right hander didn't allow any runs to score as the game progressed to the third with no score.
In the top of the third, Haley Shannon and Trinity Hatcher led off the inning with back-to-back singles, putting two runners on with no outs for the meat of the Tigers' order. West Alabama put themselves in a great position to take the lead but ultimately left Shannon and Hatcher stranded as the game remained knotted at zero.
At this point in the game, De Block was in a rhythm. The junior retired seven straight batters before a single from Montevallo's Kiley Christopher in the fifth put another runner on for the Falcons. After the base hit, De Block produced a groundout and a strikeout to end the inning, sending us to the sixth, still scoreless.
Both offenses continued to struggle, leading to extra innings. De Block remained in the circle for the Tigers and the Falcons put a pair of hits together in the eighth, with one being a walk off single by Molly Pendley to advance Montevallo to the next round.
West Alabama awaits the NCAA Selection Show as they sit at 30-19 overall.
