Women's Soccer Set for Home Opener Against Clayton State, Road Trip to Tusculum

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's soccer team will look to continue its strong start to the 2025 season as it hosts Clayton State in its home opener on Friday, September 12, at 5 p.m. at the UWA Soccer Field. The Tigers will then hit the road on Sunday, September 14, for a matchup with Tusculum in Greeneville, Tenn., a rematch of last season's opener that UWA won 1-0.

The Tigers (2-0) enter the weekend in dominant form, securing back-to-back shutout victories against Kentucky Wesleyan and Illinois Springfield to begin the season. Offensively, UWA has shown balance with four different goal scorers through the first two matches, including Selis Demirci and Bailee Fairley, who each netted game-winners. Defensively, the Tigers have been equally impressive, allowing just 14 total shots and no goals. Freshman goalkeeper Yumari Hernandez has been perfect in net, stopping all eight shots she faced while recording two clean sheets. Hernandez was named goalkeeper and freshman of the week in the GSC this week, along with Tiana Trahan winning defensive player of the week, as well for the Tigers.

Clayton State (1-1) comes to Livingston looking to build momentum after splitting its opening two matches. The Lakers have scored three goals on the season, led by Aniyah Vargas with two, while goalkeeper Rubie Kelley has been sharp with 11 saves and a .917 save percentage.

Sunday's contest against Tusculum (2-1) sets up as an early-season test on the road. The Pioneers have found offensive rhythm, scoring eight goals in their first three games, including a 5-2 win over Thomas More and a 3-2 victory at Ohio Dominican before falling to nationally ranked Lee. Sydney Grant leads Tusculum with three goals, while Amya Parker has added two of her own.

West Alabama will look to extend its season-opening win streak and build on its early defensive dominance in front of its home crowd before turning attention to a challenging non-conference road test.
