Softball Concludes Gulf Shores Invitational with Win over Knights, Tie Against Panthers

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Softball team ended the Gulf Shores Invitational with a 14-4 win over Middle Georgia State and a 3-3 tie against Florida Tech on Sunday.

UWA's (2-1-1, 0-0 GSC) offense erupted for 14 runs on 14 hits in their 10-run win over Middle Georgia State (1-2 0-0 NAIA). The Tigers matchup against Florida Tech (2-0-1, 0-0 SSC) was called early due to the contest exceeding a time limit that was set before the game.

GAME ONE: West Alabama 14, Middle Georgia State 4

Megan Roe got the start in the circle for the Tigers against the Knights and accumulated a pitching line of 6.0 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO.

Roe immediately received run support from her offense as UWA pushed across three runs in the first inning. Haley Shannon and Jessica Rose got the game started with base hits, before Ann Marie Stanbridge drove home Shannon with an RBI-single. Later in the inning,  Rose and Stanbridge both scored via passed balls, giving West Alabama a 3-0 lead.

Working with a three-run lead, Roe breezed through the first two innings, turning things back over to UWA's offense. The Tigers turned in their best inning of work in the third as they scored five runs. Ella Watson, Kayla Morris, and Sha'Keria Washington all recorded RBIs before Alexis Parson launched her first career Home Run, extending the Tigers' lead to 8-0.

Over the next two innings, Roe only allowed one hit, until running into some trouble in the fifth inning. Facing a run rule in the bottom of the fifth, Middle Georgia State scored three runs to stay alive, with Jada Akeson and Mel Bullock collecting RBI-singles.

West Alabama responded in the top of the sixth, with Shannon leading off the inning with a triple, later scoring to make it a 9-3 game. The Knights punched back in the bottom of the inning as Sarah Latham recorded an RBI-triple.

Leading 9-4 as the game entered the final frame, the Tigers added more insurance. Ella Watson began UWA's side with a leadoff Home Run before Carolyn Cagle registered her first career RBI, driving in Morris with a safety squeeze. West Alabama wasn't done in the inning, with Stanbridge and Rose adding RBI-singles that put UWA ahead 14-4.

Katey Glass relieved Roe for the final three outs as West Alabama cruised to a 14-4 win.

Shannon collected four hits while Stanbridge, Watson, and Parson recorded two RBIs a piece.

GAME TWO: West Alabama 3, Florida Tech 3

Eleanor De Block got the start for UWA against the Panthers and went all five innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs while recording nine strikeouts.

Florida Tech struck first in the opening inning as Chloe Fariello scored off a wild pitch before Emma Chisholm singled home Miranda Schwartz to put the Tigers behind 2-0.

In the next inning, Fariello recorded an RBI-single to put the Panthers ahead, 3-0. De Block settled down in the third, keeping Florida Tech off the board while UWA got on the board in the bottom half of the inning.

Rose pushed Trinity Brooks across with a safety squeeze in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 3-1. De Block put together a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fourth, turning things over to the Tigers' offense who were beginning to catch their stride.

West Alabama tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Cagle delivered a clutch two-run single.

With the momentum clearly on the side of the Tigers, the game was called early due to exceeding the contest's time limit.

West Alabama will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Daytona Beach, Florida for five games as a part of the Daytona Beach Invitational.
