MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Tennis Program sweeped their doubleheader against Division I Alabama State on Saturday.
Both West Alabama's Men's and Women's team defeated Alabama State, 4-3, as the Men (3-0) picked up their third win of the year while the Women (2-1) picked up their second.
"This was a great team effort against a talented team" said head coach Jeff Beaman. "We're doing things the right way right now and that's why we've been successful to begin the season."
WOMEN'S TENNIS: UWA 4, ASU 3
UWA opened up the match, by taking the doubles point. The doubles duo of Alexa Milliam and Shaira Rivera defeated Diana Craciun/Melisa Mekic, 6-3, while Valentina Mutilba/Jenaila Prulla upset Jovana Petrovic/Alexia Campagna, 6-4.
In singles play, Rivera defeated Craciun (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) on Line One which ultimately clinched the match for the Tigers. Mutilba remained perfect in singles play as well in Line Three, sweeping ASU's Melisa Mekic (7-5, 6-2). On Line Five, Prulla breezed through Clèanne Pickel (6-3, 6-0), giving West Alabama their fourth point of the match.
MEN'S TENNIS: UWA 4, ASU 3
The Hornets took the doubles point, despite a 6-3 win from the Tigers' duo of Gabriel Garay/Sebastiao Vilas.
UWA rebounded in singles play as Garay, Jacob Tapia, Afonso Portugal, and Sebastiao Vilas all picked up wins to clinch the victory. Garay swept Milan Ristov on Line One (7-6, 6-3) while Tapia defeated Martin Catrice (6-1, 6-1). In Line Three singles, Portugal took care of Flor De Sitter, (6-4, 4-6, 7-6) that ultimately clinched the match. To round things out, Vilas defeated Matteo Lataste, (6-4, 6-4) as West Alabama took home a 4-3 win.
The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday for a 2:00 p.m. home matchup against William Carey.
