Tennis Set to Travel to Texas for UT Tyler Invitational

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Men's and Women's Tennis teams are set to travel to Tyler, Texas for three matches at UT Tyler's invitational this weekend.

West Alabama will begin the invitational on Friday with a matchup against Midwestern State, before playing host, UT Tyler on Saturday, and Cameron on Sunday.

The third ranked West Alabama women (4-2) enter this weekend's play off the heals of a third place finish at the ITA Indoor National Championships. As for UWA's Men's squad, they are eager to get back to work after a 10-day hiatus. The Tigers enter this weekend's play a perfect 3-0 on the year with their latest win coming against William Carey.

West Alabama's Women's team is led by Shaira Rivera who has compiled a 5-1 singles record and a 4-1 doubles record through six matches. Along with Rivera, Valentina Mutilba and Jenaila Prulla have been stellar. Mutilba is 4-1 in singles play while holding a 3-3 doubles record. Prulla has been a great addition to an already stacked UWA roster this season. The junior is the only player undefeated in singles play amongst the Tigers, recording a 5-0 record.

The reigning National Freshman of the Year, Alexa Milliam, Nanoka Kazama, and Greta Zawels rounds out West Alabama as they look to continue their winning ways this weekend.

For the Men, Gabriel Garay, Federico Iturbe, Itaru Kikuchi, and Jacob Tapia all come into the weekend undefeated in singles play. The quartet has a combined singles record of 12-0 while holding a doubles record of 7-2. Along with these four talented players, Afonso Portugal is also 2-1 in singles and was named the GSC Player of the Week two weeks ago. 

Midwestern State's Men's team enters the Invitational 2-2 on the year while their Women's squad comes in with a 3-1 record. Germano Setti leads the way for the MSU men as he's garnered a 3-0 singles record in Line One this season. On the Women's side, Camila Garcia currently holds a 4-0 singles record while Selin Sepken is 3-0 in Line One singles. 

UT Tyler's men's team is 6-1 on the year and is currently ranked as the No. 5 team in the country. The Patriots competed in the ITA Indoor Championships and picked up fifth place after wins over Azusa Pacific and Lubbock Christian. Samuel Antwi and Martin Despodov lead the way as the duo has combined for a 13-0 singles record. 

UT Tyler's Women's team is ranked No. 20 in the country and come into play a perfect 5-0 to begin the season. The Patriots currently hold a 24-6 singles record as a team and possess six players on their roster who are currently undefeated in singles play.

Cameron's Men's team enter with a 2-0 overall record. The Aggies are 9-3 in singles as a team with Lukas Janousek and Santiago Ledesma both holding 2-0 individual records. For Cameron's women, they are 1-0 on the year and look to build some momentum with a tough GSC slate set for the weekend.

First serve on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday is set for 10:00 a.m. from the campus of UT Tyler.
