De Block Blanks Bucs in Game One to Propel Tigers to 3-0 Victory

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of West Alabama Softball team took Game One of their three-game series against Christian Brothers, 3-0, on Saturday, while Game Two was suspended.

West Alabama's (12-4-1, 3-1 GSC) offense couldn't get much going in Game One until a three-run seventh inning, featuring Home Runs from Kayla Morris and La'taviona Parke put the Tigers out in front over CBU (3-11, 0-4 GSC) for good.

Eleanor De Block got the start for West Alabama in Game One and recorded her second complete game shutout of the season.

Although she surrendered four walks, De Block only allowed two hits and struck out eight batters to secure her sixth win.

The senior began her outing, by walking a pair of CBU's batters in both the first and second innings, but was able to dodge out of trouble to keep the game scoreless.

For majority of the contest, a pitcher's duel ensued between De Block and Christian Brothers' Emily Schooler. The game progressed all the way to the seventh inning with three combined hits and zero runs scored between the two teams.

The Tigers finally broke the ice in the final frame, scoring three runs in the inning. Morris opened up the top half with a solo Home Run, putting UWA out in front, 1-0. Shakeria Washington was due up next and drew a walk, before La'Taviona Parke blasted a two-run homer to extend West Alabama's lead to three.

A three-run cushion would be more than enough for De Block in the bottom of the seventh as she retired the Bucs' side in order to clinch a 3-0 win for UWA.

Game Two began approximately 30 minutes after the Tigers' 3-0 win in Game One, but ended up being suspended due to darkness. UWA and CBU will resume Game Two on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. with the contest tied at eight in the ninth inning.
