ROME, Ga. - The University of West Alabama Women's Tennis team earned a massive, 4-2, win over No. 7 North Georgia on Sunday while the Men's team fell, 4-2 to the 14th ranked Nighthawks.
West Alabama's Women's team (10-3, 1-1 GSC) won the doubles point before taking three of the five singles matches to clinch their victory over No. 7 North Georgia (11-3, 1-0 PBC).
The doubles tandems of Shaira Rivera/Alexa Milliam and Valentina Mutilba/Jenaila Prulla both recorded 6-4 decisions in Lines One and Two to secure the doubles point for the Tigers.
Fresh off a doubles victory, Rivera registered a clean (7-5, 6-3) win over the Nighthawks' No. 1, Anastasiia Opolska. Now up 2-0, UWA fell in Lines Two and Four before Nanoka Kazama and Prulla clinched the match for West Alabama on Lines Five and Six. On Line Five, Prulla remained unbeaten on the year as she defeated Victoria Niox-Chateau, (6-4, 6-1). Kazama followed suit on Lines Six as she picked up a (2-6, 6-1, 6-4) victory over North Georgia's Emily Bush.
On the Men's side, the doubles duo of Afonso Portugal/Maksim Goncharov won their doubles match, 6-3, but the Tigers would ultimately lose the doubles point, with losses coming in Lines One and Two.
Jacob Tapia got UWA on the board as the junior claimed a (6-2, 6-3) victory on Line Two singles. Later in the match, Federico Iturbe picked up a (6-3, 6-4) win on Line Four. Tapia and Iturbe were responsible for West Alabama's two points as No. 14 North Georgia went on to win, 4-2.
