CLEVELAND, Miss. — The University of West Alabama Softball team secured a decisive 12-0 victory over Delta State in Game Three to win the series on Sunday.
UWA's (20-7, 11-4 GSC) offense remained hot as the Tigers pushed across 12 runs on 12 hits while Eleanor De Block pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing only three hits and striking out three batters over six innings in route to a 12-run win over DSU (11-19, 5-10 GSC).
With the win, head coach Stephanie Defeo officially records her 500th career victory.
The Tigers dominated the Statesmen with a decisive 12-0 victory. The game opened with a scoreless first inning, as both teams were unable to put any runs on the board.
In the second inning, ShaKeria Washington hit a solo home run to center field, her fourth of the series. Kayla Morris followed that up with a two-run homer to right center, bringing Trinity Hatcher home. This gave UWA an early 3-0 lead after the second inning.
West Alabama added another run in the fourth inning when Morris hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Daphne Fowler to score, extending the lead to 4-0. In the fifth inning, Washington's double, combined with an error, brought in two more runs, with Washington later scoring on Hatcher's single, bringing the lead to 7-0.
The sixth inning saw another surge from the Tigers, starting with a three-run triple by Haley Shannon, followed by an RBI-single from Ella Watson. Hatcher drew a bases-loaded walk to cap off a five-run inning, pushing the lead to 12-0. West Alabama's ace, Eleanor De Block pitched a gem while the Tigers' defense held strong throughout, maintaining a shutout.
Shannon recorded two hits and drove in three runs, including a triple with the bases loaded. Washington contributed with a home run and a double, tallying three RBIs and scoring twice. Hatcher added three hits and two RBIs, helping to drive the team's offensive effort. De Block pitched a complete game shutout, allowing three hits and striking out three over six innings.
