No. 31 Tigers Set to Host No. 47 Muleriders in Midweek Showdown

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The No. 31 West Alabama Tigers return home on Tuesday, March 24, as they host No. 47 Southern Arkansas Muleriders at the Vaughan Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 11 a.m. as the Tigers look to build momentum in the middle of their spring schedule.

West Alabama enters the matchup with a 7-4 overall record and a 1-1 mark in Gulf South Conference play, continuing to establish itself among the top programs in the region. The Tigers are led by nationally ranked standout Matias Iturbe, who checks in at No. 23 in singles despite not yet competing during the spring season, following a strong 5-2 record in fall play.

In dual action, the Tigers have been paced by a deep and balanced singles lineup. Federico Iturbe has been one of the team's most consistent performers, posting a 6-1 record overall, including a perfect 4-0 mark in the No. 4 position and entering the match on a three-match winning streak. Jacob Tapia has also been a key contributor with a 7-4 record, including a 3-1 mark at No. 1 singles, while Gabriel Garay holds a 5-3 record and has won two straight matches at the top of the lineup.

Afonso Portugal has added stability in the middle of the order with a 6-3 record, including a 5-3 mark in the No. 3 spot, while the Tigers collectively hold a 33-21 singles record this spring.

Doubles play has also been a key component for West Alabama, highlighted by the nationally ranked No. 30 tandem of Jacob Tapia and Federico Iturbe. The duo owns a 7-4 record overall, including a 4-1 mark in the No. 2 position. Meanwhile, the pairing of Afonso Portugal and Maksim Goncharov has been dominant, posting a 7-1 record and riding a five-match winning streak.

Southern Arkansas enters Tuesday's matchup at 7-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play, bringing a competitive lineup led by Frode Neumann, who is ranked No. 68 nationally in singles and holds a 6-2 dual record. Jonas Sommer has also been a strong presence with a 6-4 record, while Lucas Nitschke adds depth with a 4-3 mark.

The Muleriders' strength may lie in doubles, where the nationally ranked No. 7 pairing of Jonas Sommer and Uwe Diehl has compiled a 7-2 record, along with the No. 40 duo of Lucas Nitschke and Frode Neumann. As a team, Southern Arkansas holds an 18-15 doubles record and will look to challenge West Alabama early by securing the doubles point.

With both teams featuring nationally ranked talent and depth throughout the lineup, Tuesday's match sets up to be a competitive contest as the Tigers aim to defend their home courts and continue their push through the spring season.
