MERIDIAN, Miss. - The University of West Alabama Men's Tennis team defeated the Southern Arkansas Muleriders, 6-1, in Meridian on Tuesday.
West Alabama (8-4, 1-1 GSC) earns their eighth win of the season with their 6-1 victory over Southern Arkansas (9-6, 2-0).
The Tigers won the doubles point to open the match, taking a 1-0 lead. Jacob Tapia/Federico Iturbe and Maksim Goncharov/Afonso Portugal claimed victories on Lines Two and Three with scores of 6-4 and 6-1, respectively.
Working with a 1-0 lead as play progressed to singles, Tapia took care of business on Line One, defeating Lucas Nitzscheke, (6-4, 6-1). Portugal followed suit on Line Two, taking a (6-0, 6-2) win over Frode Neumann. Now up 3-0, Iturbe clinched the match with a (6-1, 6-2) win in Line Four.
Although UWA clinched the match, play continued as Itaru Kikuchi defeated Andreas Seidel, (6-4, 6-3) on Line Six. To close things out, Goncharov earned a three-set victory, (4-6, 6-2, 11-9) over SAU's Balsa Djokovic.
West Alabama will be back in action on Monday for a non-conference matchup against Columbus State on the road.
