CLINTON, Miss. – The University of West Alabama men's and No. 1 women's tennis teams earned impressive victories Monday morning, defeating Lynn University at a neutral-site matchup in Clinton, Mississippi. The top-ranked Tiger women secured a 4-1 win, while the UWA men posted a 4-0 victory over the Fighting Knights.
Women's Tennis – No. 1 UWA 4, Lynn 1
The nation's top-ranked Tigers set the tone early by capturing the doubles point with victories on two courts.
At No. 1 doubles, Shaira Rivera and Alexa Milliam earned a strong 6-3 victory over Carla Galmiche and Kristen Younes. The tandem of Nanoka Kazama and Greta Zawels followed with a dominant 6-1 win against Meadow Garcia and Paula Garcia at the No. 3 position to clinch the point for West Alabama.
In singles play, Lynn picked up its lone point at the top of the lineup as Salma Djoubri defeated Rivera 6-1, 6-2.
The Tigers responded with three straight-set victories to secure the match. Jian Ibrahim battled through a tight first set before pulling away for a 7-6, 6-2 win over Meadow Garcia at No. 3 singles. Jenaila Prulla delivered another strong performance at the No. 4 spot, defeating Galmiche 6-4, 6-0. Nanoka Kazama then clinched the team victory with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win over Hailey Lizano at No. 5 singles.
Two other singles matches went unfinished once the team result was decided.
Men's Tennis – UWA 4, Lynn 0
The Tigers also opened the match by claiming the doubles point with wins on courts two and three.
Federico Iturbe and Jacob Tapia earned a 6-4 victory over Aymen Alimoussa and Santino Morel at No. 2 doubles, while Afonso Portugal and Maksim Goncharov secured a 6-3 win against Lennart Ostheimer and Victor Alves at the No. 3 position.
In singles competition, West Alabama continued its momentum with strong performances throughout the lineup.
Gabriel Garay put the Tigers ahead 2-0 with a commanding 6-4, 6-1 victory over Louay Makke at No. 1 singles. Jacob Tapia followed with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win against Alimoussa at the No. 2 position.
Federico Iturbe delivered the clinching point at No. 5 singles, defeating Santino Morel 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 to secure the team victory for UWA. Several other singles matches were left unfinished after the Tigers reached the four-point match total.
The wins add another strong result for both West Alabama programs as they continue their early-season schedules.
