LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The University of West Alabama Softball team fell in Game One to No. 15 West Florida, 13-8, at the UWA Softball Complex on Friday.
The Tigers faced the Argos in a game where both teams exhibited strong offensive performances. West Alabama hit .345 on the day while West Florida batted .438 at the plate.
(27-9-1, 16-6 GSC) (31-8, 16-6 GSC) Despite the loss, West Alabama (27-9-1, 16-6 GSC) managed to score five runs in the sixth inning, narrowing the lead before UWF (31-8, 16-6 GSC) sealed the victory with three runs in the seventh.
UWF struck first as the Argos pushed across two runs in the top of the first inning on Eleanor De Block.
In the second inning, La'Taviona Parke put UWA on the board with a solo home run to right field, bringing the score to 2–1. West Florida's Jessie Baughan hit a two-run homer in the top of the third to extend the Argonauts lead to 4-1. UWA couldn't answer in the bottom half of the inning while UWF added on to their lead in the fourth and fifth innings.
In the fourth, Miranda Harmon recorded an RBI-single before Baughan drove in her third run of the game in the fifth with a sacrifice fly.
Now trailing by five, the Tigers threw their counterpunch in the fifth inning. Ann Marie Stanbridge hit a two-run home run to right center, scoring Trinity Brooks and closing the gap to 6–3.
After having their lead cut to three, West Florida responded with four runs in the sixth inning, making it a 10-3 game.
The Tigers needed another spark and got one in the sixth inning. Parke and Trinity Hatcher hit back-to-back doubles to begin the inning to cut the deficit to six. Jessica Rose followed that with an RBI-single before Haley Shannon hit a two-run triple. Stanbridge concluded the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly which made it a 10-8 game as we advanced to the seventh.
The Argos extended their lead in the seventh inning with three more runs, including a solo home run by Meg Fountain, bringing the final score to 13–8 in favor of UWF.
Shannon recorded two hits and drove in two runs, contributing significantly to the team's scoring. Stanbridge hit a home run and collected three RBIs, showcasing her power at the plate. Parke added two runs and hit a home run, further bolstering the offense. Trinity Hatcher finished with two hits, including a double, and drove in a run.
West Alabama and No. 15 West Florida will conclude their series on Saturday with a doubleheader that's set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
