LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The University of West Alabama Softball team completed an impressive doubleheader sweep over Columbus State on Wednesday.
The Tigers took Game One, 2-1, before Eleanor De Block blanked the Cougars in Game Two, leading UWA (30-10-1) to a 2-0 victory. Pitching was the calling card for West Alabama as Block and Megan Roe held CSU (27-17) to one run on seven hits through 14 innings.
GAME ONE: UWA 2, CSU 1
West Alabama secured a narrow victory over CSU with a 2–1 win. The game saw a pivotal fourth inning where CSU opened the scoring. Anna Waites doubled down the left field line and later scored on a throwing error, giving CSU a 1–0 lead.
UWA responded in the bottom of the same inning. Haley Shannon singled, and Ella Watson followed with a two-run homer to left center, bringing Shannon home and giving the Tigers a 2–1 lead. For the remainder of the game, Roe kept the Cougars off the board as West Alabama went on to win, 2-1.
Watson delivered a strong performance, recording one home run and driving in two runs. Roe pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and striking out three batters over 7.0 innings. Shannon contributed offensively with one hit and scored a run.
GAME TWO: UWA 2, CSU 0
West Alabama secured a 2-0 victory over Columbus State with a pivotal fourth inning.
De Block got the start in Game Two and recorded her seventh complete game shutout of the season.
In the bottom of the fourth, Trinity Hatcher led off with a single to center field. ShaKeria Washington followed with a sacrifice bunt, advancing Hatcher to second. Kayla Morris then doubled down the left field line, bringing in Hatcher for the first run. Trinity Brooks added another run with a single, and a throwing error by the third baseman allowed Morris to score. The inning concluded with West Alabama leading 2-0.
Despite dealing with some control issues, De Block kept Columbus State off the board and led UWA to their 2-0 win.
While De Block dazzled in the circle, Ann Marie Stanbridge contributed offensively with two hits, including a double. Brooks added to the scoring with two hits and one RBI. Morris recorded a hit and an RBI, along with a double and a sacrifice hit.
West Alabama will resume GSC play this weekend when they travel to Lee for a three-game series that is set to begin on Saturday.
