PENSACOLA, Fla. - The #16 ranked and seventh-seeded West Alabama Tigers men's tennis saw its season come to an end Monday morning, falling to host and second-seeded West Florida Argonauts by a 4-1 final score in the NCAA Division II South Region Quarterfinals in Pensacola, Florida.
The Tigers conclude the 2026 campaign with a 15-8 overall record after reaching both the Gulf South Conference Tournament semifinals and the NCAA Tournament.
West Alabama opened the match battling for momentum in doubles play against the nation's top-ranked team. The Tigers' nationally ranked doubles tandem of Jacob Tapia and Federico Iturbe fought hard, but the Argonauts ultimately secured the doubles point to take an early 1-0 advantage. With Tapia and Iturbe falling to top three ranked pair of Duran and Rondon, 6-3, Itaru Kikuchi and Sebastiao Vilas fell to Neyelov and Quintela, 6-1, and the pair of Maxim Goncharov and Afonso Portugal won their match against Couto and Sabio, 6-3.
In singles competition, the Tigers continued to fight against a loaded West Florida lineup that featured multiple nationally ranked players. Kikuchi provided the lone point for UWA, earning a strong singles victory to even the match at one point during the contest.
The Argonauts, however, answered with three additional singles wins to clinch the regional quarterfinal victory and advance in the NCAA Tournament bracket. With Sebastian Rondon winning against Jacob Tapia in straight sets, then Diego Duran won against Afonso Portugal in a hard fought three set match. Also, Goncalo Quintela was the victor against Sebastiao Vilas in straight sets. Other matches of Goncharov and Iturbe went unfinished.
West Florida entered the postseason as the No. 1 ranked team nationally and improved to 25-1 overall on the season with the win. The Argonauts were led throughout the year by nationally top-ranked singles player Sebastian Rondon and No. 3 ranked Diego Duran.
Despite the loss, the Tigers wrapped up one of the strongest seasons in program history. West Alabama spent much of the spring ranked nationally in the ITA Top 25 and earned the No. 3 seed in the GSC Tournament before advancing to the conference semifinals.
Individually, the Tigers were led throughout the year by Tapia, Portugal, and Iturbe. Tapia finished the season nationally ranked in singles, while the doubles pairing of Tapia and Iturbe remained inside the national top 20 for much of the spring.
Portugal also turned in an outstanding campaign for the Tigers, earning All-GSC First Team honors after leading the team in singles victories during the dual-match season.
West Alabama's NCAA Tournament appearance marked another significant step forward for the program as the Tigers once again competed among the top teams in Division II tennis.
