Benjamin White Announced as Inaugural Women's Flag Football Head Coach

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Athletics Department announced the hiring of Benjamin White as the University's inaugural women's flag football head coach on Tuesday.

White takes over the newly established program after UWA announced the addition of women's flag football on Oct. 2, 2025.

"The addition of women's flag football is such an exciting opportunity for UWA, and Coach White has the drive, talent, and leadership to start this history-making chapter and lay the foundation for the program," said UWA President Dr. Todd G. Fritch. "Enhancing student opportunities and growing enrollment, including new and expanded athletic programs, aligns with the themes and priorities outlined in our 10-year strategic plan. We are proud to welcome Coach White to the UWA family and support him in the establishment of what we expect to be a highly competitive athletic program."

A native of Savannah, Georgia, White brings extensive experience and success as both a player and coach that features multiple flag football national championships on his ledger.

"We're excited to welcome Coach White as the first head coach of our women's flag football program," said Director of Athletics Brett Gilliland. "This is an important step forward for our department as we continue expanding opportunities for female student-athletes and growing the game on our campus. Starting a brand-new program takes the right kind of leader and Coach White brings energy, vision, and a real passion for building something special. We're confident he will create a strong culture for our student-athletes and lay the foundation for long-term success both on and off the field."

White began his coaching career at Calvary Day School in 2021, serving as an assistant coach with an emphasis on offensive strategy and concepts. With White on staff, Calvary Day School went on to win three Regional Championships, before taking home the inaugural Future Stars (FSG) Women's High School National Championship in 2024.

In 2022, White secured the first head coaching position of his career as he was named the leader of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes U18 team. In this role, White was both the offensive and defensive play caller and strategist, while spearheading the program's recruiting efforts.

Before entering coaching, White enjoyed a successful playing career, winning the seven-man National and World Flag Championship with Team Savannah in 2019.

"I am truly honored and grateful for the opportunity to become the inaugural head flag football coach at the University of West Alabama," said White.  "This is an exciting moment not only for me personally, but for the University and the future of women's flag football. I'm excited to help build this program from the ground up, establish a strong culture of excellence, and provide our student-athletes with an unforgettable experience both on and off the field."

With Women's Flag Football set to officially begin competition in Spring 2027, White is scheduled to officially begin his tenure at UWA on June 1 and is already aggressive on the recruiting trail.

"I want to thank the administration and everyone at UWA for believing in my vision and trusting me to lead this new program," White continued. "I can't wait to get to work and represent the Tigers with pride."
