MONTEVALLO, Ala. — The University of West Alabama women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2026 season Tuesday evening, falling 4-1 to Montevallo in a non-conference matchup at Varsity Field.
The Tigers (1-1) battled throughout the contest but were unable to overcome a strong offensive performance from the Falcons (2-0), who scored three times in the second half to pull away.
Montevallo opened the scoring in the 27th minute when Janelle Torres found the back of the net off an assist from Lainey Farabaugh, giving the Falcons a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
West Alabama goalkeeper Yumari Hernandez kept the Tigers within striking distance in the opening half, making three saves on Montevallo's 14 first-half shots.
The Falcons doubled their advantage early in the second half when Ayla Ertekin scored in the 53rd minute, with Karsyn Ross providing the assist.
West Alabama continued to fight and cut the deficit in half in the 76th minute. Campbell Wysong found the back of the net for her first goal of the season and of her career, making the score 2-1 and giving the Tigers renewed momentum.
Montevallo, however, answered late. Mary Casey restored the Falcons' two-goal advantage in the 85th minute before Ross added another goal just 1:37 later, assisted by Ertekin, to cap the scoring at 4-1.
Hernandez finished the evening with eight saves for the Tigers, including five in the second half. Montevallo goalkeeper Ciara Duff recorded one save.
The Falcons controlled the offensive statistics, holding a 27-4 advantage in shots and a 12-1 edge in corner kicks. West Alabama recorded two shots on goal, while Montevallo put 12 of its 27 attempts on frame.
Kya Jacobs led the Tigers with two shots, while Wysong, Sofia Lacey and Mikaela Carpino each added one attempt.
Despite the result, West Alabama returns to action quickly as the Tigers continue their road swing.
The Tigers will travel to face USC Beaufort on Saturday, September 5, at 1 p.m.
