MOBILE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Spring Hill College Saturday afternoon at Library Field in Gulf South Conference action.
The Tigers move to 1-7-0 overall and 0-5-0 in GSC play, while the Badgers improve to 4-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in league action.
West Alabama and Spring Hill played to a scoreless first half, with both teams recording three shots. The Tigers put two shots on target in the opening 45 minutes, with Bailee Fairley and Mikaela Carpino both forcing saves from Spring Hill goalkeeper Ava Bell.
Goalkeeper Yumari Hernandez also kept the Badgers off the scoreboard in the first half, recording two saves, including stops on shots from Sofia Jimenez Garcia and Sage Thomas.
The deadlock was broken in the 68th minute when Madison Hitzman found the back of the net at the 67:35 mark, giving Spring Hill a 1-0 advantage.
The Tigers continued to battle for an equalizer throughout the remainder of the match. Kya Jacobs put a shot on goal in the 84th minute, but Bell made the save to preserve the Spring Hill lead. Jade Arruda added another shot late, but her attempt went wide.
West Alabama finished with nine shots, including four on goal, while Spring Hill also recorded nine shots with five on target. Both teams finished with three corner kicks.
Hernandez recorded four saves for the Tigers, while Bell made four saves for the Badgers.
Fairley and Jacobs each recorded two shots for West Alabama, while Arruda and Carpino added two shots apiece.
The Tigers will return home Wednesday, October 2, hosting Christian Brothers University at the UWA Track and Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
