Five Named to Daktronics All-Super Region 2 Team

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Fresh off a successful 2009 season that saw the University of West Alabama football team advance to the Second Round of the NCAA Division II Football Championships, five Tigers claimed Daktronics All-Super Region II Team honors.

Junior wide receiver Terry Allen, senior linebacker Tariq Ali and freshman defensive back Shontral Ford were each named to the First Team. Junior offensive linemen Jared Porter and Justin Moore (Carthage, Miss.) each received Second Team laurels.

Allen, a Huntsville, Ala.-native, is the only non-newcomer for the Tigers on the list as Allen was tabbed with a Daktronics All-Southeast Region First Team accolade in 2007. Allen, Ali (Birmingham, Ala.) and Porter (Winfield, Ala.) were named to the All-Gulf South Conference Teams and Ford (Jackson, Miss.) was named the Freshman Defensive Player of the Year.

UWA concluded the 2009 season with a 59-41 loss at Carson-Newman. The Red and White made its first appearance in the NCAA Division II Playoffs in 34 years. During the season, the Tigers gathered an 8-5 record, the most wins since 1975, eight All-GSC honors, wins over then nationally ranked Delta State and then ranked No. 1 North Alabama along with a First Round victory at Albany State. UWA posted a 5-1 record at Tiger Stadium, the best since 1985, and tallied the most wins over GSC opponents since 1981 with six.
