LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women’s basketball team wraps up a five-game road trip this weekend as UWA (2-3) travels to Pensacola, Fla. to take part in the West Florida hosted UWF Argo Classic. The Tigers open the classic with a 4:00 p.m. contest on Friday, Dec. 4 against Columbus State.
UWA, which opened the season 2-0, seeks its first road win of the season and first victory away from Pruitt Hall since Feb. 28 last season, a 56-54 win at Montevallo. The Tigers etched their first wins of last season at the UWF hosted tournament against Livingstone and Eckerd. EC is the opponent of the Tigers on Saturday.
Through the first five games of the season, freshman Brittany Yeager leads the Red and White in scoring and rebounding. The forward from Woodstock, Ga. is averaging 14.4 points and seven rebounds per game. The scoring average ranks 14th in the Gulf South Conference while the rebound mark is tied for ninth in the conference. Yeager is shooting 63-percent from the floor, which is fourth in the GSC, and has logged the third most blocks in the conference with nine.
Sophomore Jessie Clark enters the contests ranked among the GSC leaders in assists with 12 while junior Qweetta Ward is third among the conference leaders in steals with 14 on the season.
Friday’s contest marks the third meeting all-time between Columbus State and UWA, the first since the 1991-92 season. The Red and White are 2-0 vs. the Cougars. Saturday’s outing against EC is the second meeting in the series with UWA holding the lone decision.
CSU, which was picked fourth in the Peach Belt, has dropped its last two outings against Tusculum and Carson-Newman. The Red and Blue’s lone win came in an 80-76 decision at Mars Hill. Phebe Smith paces CSU in scoring and rebounding with a 22.3 scoring clip and 13.3 rebounds per game, which top in the PBC.
EC is 2-2 on the season after falling 66-52 vs. Montevallo over the weekend. Ashley Lutz paces the Tritons with 13.3 points per game, which ranks ninth in the Sunshine State Conference. Jordan Stacey leads the way on the glass with conference leading 9.7 rebounds per game.
Following the games in Pensacola this weekend, West Alabama will begin a three-game homestand before observing the holiday break. UWA will host Christian Brothers on Saturday, Dec. 12. Tip-off is slated for 4:00 p.m. against CBU.
