UWA Rally Falls Short

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – North Alabama's Jameica York knocked down two free throws securing a 51-46 victory over the University of West Alabama in Gulf South Conference East Division action. The pair of shots from the charity stripe followed a UWA (3-13) three-pointer by Erin Courington with 13 seconds remaining in the contest that would have tied the game at 49-all. UWA falls to 0-2 in GSC play as the Lions improve to 2-1 in conference and 8-10 overall.

Latashia Greer led the Red and White in scoring with 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds. It marks the seventh contest as the leading scorer for the Dadeville, Ala.-junior and the sixth as the leading rebounder.

A Dana Jackson layup put UNA up 49-38 with 4:30 to play in the contest. Back-to-back buckets from Courington narrowed the margin to six points following a backend free throw from Jenni Thomley, sparking an 8-0 run.

Freshman Dakota Powell pulled the Red and White within three points on a trey with 38 ticks on the clock. Courington finished the night with eight points while Powell concluded the contest with nine points.

Sanqueeta Meardith led UNA with 10 points while tying Niala Harris with a team-best five rebounds. Harris finished with nine points along with York.

The Tigers out muscled UNA on the boards 35-31; marking just the third time this season the Red and White have held the advantage on the glass against the opposition this season. The Lions gained the upper hand in the contest as the UNA bench outscored the Red and White 25-12.

West Alabama steps out of conference play on Saturday, Feb. 16 as UWA hosts Lambuth. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The game will be available via live stats and live video streaming at athletics.uwa.edu.
