Tigers Prepared To Travel To Florida For Crossover

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Seeking to continue its hot play of late, the University of West Alabama volleyball team will head to Lakeland, Fla. this weekend for the 2010 South Region Crossover to take on a trio of strong opponents.

West Alabama – which sports a 7-12 record on the year – will look to a trio of players to continue playing at the level at which they performed Monday night in a 3-1 win at Arkansas at Monticello. Katelyn Beardshear attacked at a .419 clip in the contest, recording 14 kills and just one error on 31 attempts, while Thais Hollerbach picked up 17 kills and hit at a .300 clip in the win. Alexis McHale recorded 48 assists – her highest total of the season.

The Tigers will open the weekend Friday evening with a 6 p.m. showdown against Florida Southern – the host institution. The Mocs own a 14-4 record and have rolled off five consecutive victories since dropping a 3-2 decision to West Florida on Sept. 27.

The all-time series between UWA and Southern is tied at one, and the Tigers defeated FSC by a 3-0 score last season.

Play continues for the Red and White with a noon contest with Lynn on Saturday. The Fighting Knights and the Tigers met earlier in the season with Lynn sweeping aside UWA 3-0. Beardshear recording a .312 hitting percentage in that match while tallying eight kills, but Lynn hit at a solid .354 rate as a team to own the match.

With the win earlier this season, LU now leads the all-time slate with the Tigers by a 3-0 mark.

The stiffest test of the weekend will be the Tigers' final one and will come from No. 3 Tampa as UWA will meet the Spartans at 5 p.m. Saturday. UT is also riding a five-game winning streak but has struggled somewhat of late as each of its previous two opponents – Barry and Nova Southeastern – has taken the national power to five sets. Tampa features the reining AVCA Player of the Week in Danielle Selkridge who hit at an impressive .625 while recording 34 total kills in UT's two matches a week ago.

West Alabama has only faced Tampa once – a 3-0 UT victory last season.
