LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama volleyball squad enters the last day of the regular season with hopes of reaching the conference tournament for the fourth straight season. A Friday night win on the road at North Alabama would clinch a berth for the Tigers who own a 10-19 record including a 2-7 mark in Gulf South Conference play.
The match in Florence, Ala. is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
West Alabama placed itself in this position with a victory on Tuesday night against UAH, and the two teams now sit tied for the fourth and final seed in the tournament. By winning the season series six sets to four, the Tigers hold the next tiebreaker after head-to-head – the two teams split its pair of matches – and thus would make postseason with either a win or a Lady Charger loss to West Georgia coupled with a UWG loss against UNA on Saturday..
In order to earn a berth on its own, the Red and White will have to earn revenge for a 3-1 loss on Oct. 5 in Livingston. The Tigers took the first set by a 26-24 score before dropping the next three frames to the Lions. Katelyn Beardshear paced the UWA offensive effort in the contest as she recorded 11 kills in the match, while Alexis McHale and Olivia Drew each tallied 12 digs in defensive play.
The Lions own a 17-8 overall record with a 6-2 record in GSC play and have won four of their five previous contests, and UNA is in second in the East Division as it is percentage points ahead of Valdosta State who are 7-3 on the season in conference action. While they cannot surpass division champion West Florida, a win would strengthen the Lions' chances for the second seed in the tournament.
