FLORENCE, Ala. – A layup by North Alabama's Lacey Lewis with one second remaining in the game sinks the hopes of the University of West Alabama women's basketball as UWA (6-17, 3-4 GSC) falls 62-60 at Flowers Hall on the UNA campus.
Latashia Greer led the Tigers with 22 points and finished one rebound shy of her fifth double-double of the season with nine boards in the loss.
Niala Harris led all scorers with 23 points for the Lions followed by 13 points from Dana Jackson. Lewis paced the Purple and Gold on the glass with seven rebounds.
UWA jumped out to an early seven point in the contest but watched the Lions chip away at the deficit. UNA claimed its largest lead of the game, 35-28, on a pair of free throws from Sequoyah Cliff with 2:38 remaining in the first half. The Tigers cut the lead to three points on a layup by Keiara Middleton but Harris added the final three points of the half to give UNA a 38-32 lead at the half.
The Red and White opened the second half on a 10-5 run to pull the deficit within one as Greer capped off the scoring spurt with an old fashioned three point play. Greer gave the Tigers their first lead of the second half with a layup at the 9:03 mark. UWA would hold the advantage in the contest until the Lewis hit two shots from the free throw line to tie the game at 60-all.
West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 13 as UWA travels to Lambuth for the final non-conference contest of the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
