Tigers Looking To End Drought At UAH Tourney

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama volleyball team will attempt to snap its four-game slide as the squad travels to Huntsville, Ala. this weekend for a pair of contests at the 2010 UAH Country Inn and Suites Volleyball Invitational.

UWA currently sits at 2-6 after dropping four matches last weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. to tough competition.

The Tigers will play a pair of Gulf South Conference members in non-conference matchups in the weekend tournament beginning with a 2:30 pm match against Henderson State on Friday. The Lady Reddies lead the all-time series between the two teams, but the Red and White swept a pair of meetings a year ago.

Arkansas Tech will be UWA's Saturday opponent, and the match with the Golden Suns will begin at 9 a.m. The Tigers have won just two of eight prior meetings with Tech, but a dramatic five-set match in the opening round of the GSC tournament last season went the way of West Alabama.

HSU owns a 5-1 record, while Tech checks in at 5-3 on the year.

The Tigers are led by preseason all-conference selection Thais Hollerbach who has recorded a team-best 68 kills along with 92 digs – a number that is good for second on the team behind Casey Byrnes' 96. Katelyn Beardshear is also on the UWA leader board as she has collected 64 kills and a squad-leading 16 blocks.

Olivia Drew is pacing West Alabama with 146 assists.
