HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama volleyball team lost by a 3-0 score to Arkansas Tech Saturday morning at the 2010 UAH Country Inn and Suites Invitational to fall to 3-7 on the year while the Golden Suns improve to 11-3.
There was no foreshadowing of what was to come as the opening set was a close affair through its first 10 points as the two teams were tied at 5-5, but the rest of the opener was all Arkansas Tech's as it scored the next 11 points and ultimately won the frame 25-9. UWA committed a combined 14 errors in the set and hit at a -.259 clip while the Golden Suns registered a .333 hitting percentage.
The second started the way the first ended as Tech pushed out to an 8-1 lead to begin the set, but it was the Tigers who then stole the momentum by going on a 13-6 run to pull even at 14-14. The Tigers capitalized on five ATU errors, and Jennifer Campbell collected three kills during the string of UWA points.
But the comeback bid wound up short as the Golden Suns recaptured the ebb of the contest to win the second set 25-17.
Arkansas Tech proceeded to wrap up the match with a 25-14 win in the third.
Thais Hollerbach was tops on the team in kills as she collected seven in the match to go along with 10 digs – a figure matched by Casey Byrnes to lead the squad. Alexis McHale paced the Tigers with nine assists.
Sarah Von Lienen led all players with 11 kills as she helped Arkansas Tech to an overall hitting percentage of .271 by attacking at a .368 clip herself. Kera Dukic turned in 23 assists, and Brennae Benda picked up a game-high 13 digs.
The Tigers will have Sunday off before returning home on Monday for a 7 p.m. contest with Arkansas at Monticello. Live stats will be available through www.uwaathletics.com.
