PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Alabama volleyball team finished the 2010 Comfort Inn-vitational hosted by the University of West Florida on a positive note Saturday, sweeping aside Wilmington University after falling to Eckerd College earlier in the day.
The Tigers now sit at 1-2 on the year.
UWA put together its first dominating effort of the young season in the nightcap by beating Wilmington 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-18).
Particularly strong in the winning effort was newcomer Olivia Drew as the junior compiled a match-high 33 assists. Thais Hollerbach turned in a nice performance as well as she recorded her second double-double of the year with 10 kills to go with 11 digs.
Katelyn Beardshear matched Hollerbach with 10 kills for game-high honors.
The Tigers hit at a .353 clip in the first set and the team's attack percentage in the second set was a strong .304, but the toil of three games in two days caught up with the Red and White as the squad registered just a .163 mark in the third and final set for a .255 total performance for the game.
With 20 attack errors, Wilmington was held to a -.019 hitting percentage in the contest.
The victory over Wilmington was a nice rebound after Eckerd took the day's first match from the Tigers winning 3-0 by scores of 25-17, 25-15, and 25-23. The Tritons set the tone with a dominating performance in the first set as they hit at an impressive .773 clip. Eckerd ended the match outhitting UWA by a .404 to .244 margin.
Jennifer Campbell led the Red and White in kills in the contest as she tallied seven, and Olivia Drew paced the team with 15 assists. On top defensively for the Tigers was Alexis McHale who recorded seven of West Alabama's 24 digs.
The strong Eckerd performance was due in part to Taylor Whaley and Ariana Chinn who hit at a .727 and .579 clip respectively.
West Alabama will now return to Livingston for its first home contest of the year as the Tigers are slated to take on Loyola (La.) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
