LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team snapped a five-game losing skid on Sunday afternoon as the Tigers (2-6) ousted Spring Hill 77-42 at Pruitt Hall. SHC falls to 4-6 in the loss. The victory gives the Red and White its first home win of the 2011-2012 campaign.
Jamie Gunter tallied 13 points and 13 rebounds off the bench to lead the Red and White to the win. The double-double effort in the first of her career in a Tigers uniform as the Columbus, Miss., native became the fourth Tiger to lead UWA in scoring this season while shooting 41-percent from the field.
Brittany Weathers finished the contest with 10 points and one rebound shy of her fourth double-double of the campaign. The double digit scoring effort marks the sixth time this season that the Hattiesburg, Miss., product has scored in double figures.
UWA never trailed in the contest jumping out to a 39-14 lead at the intermission. The 35 point halftime lead was the largest margin at the break by the Red and White this season while the 14 Lady Badger points in the first half was a season-low for the Tigers' opposition. SHC's 42 points also ranked as the fewest allowed by UWA this season.
The Tigers dominated the paint in the 35-point triumph, posting 44 points and scoring 18 points off of 22 SHC turnovers. UWA also out rebound the Lady Badgers 53-45, marking the second straight outing the Red and White has out-boarded their opposition.
In the victory, UWA posted season-highs in field goals made (32), rebounds (53), assists (24) and blocked shots (4).
LaSheena Nation led all SHC scorers with 11 points while April Bradford paced the Lady Badgers on the glass with 11 rebounds, all defensive.
West Alabama returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 15 as the Tigers travel to Valdosta, Ga., for the two-day VSU Days Inn Classic. UWA opens with Coastal Georgia and concludes its pre-holiday slate on Friday, Dec. 16 against Columbus State. Both tips are scheduled for 1 p.m. central.
