MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team closed out the 2011 portion of its schedule with a 63-57 victory at Montevallo on Saturday afternoon. The win extended the Tigers (5-6) streak to a season-long four games.
Nikkia Jordan led the Red and White with 15 points while
Tamya Thompson chimed in 11.
Brittany Weathers paced on the way on the glass with 11 rebounds.
In the triumph, the Tigers held a plus-11 rebound advantage in the contest while converting 14 second chance points, doubling up the Falcons.
UM (5-6) led the entire opening half and grabbed its largest lead at 18 points with just over 3 minutes remaining before the intermission. The Tigers however used an 8-0 during the final minutes of the first half to only trail 35-25 at the break.
UWA chipped away at the Purple and Gold's lead much of the second half and finally with 3:19 left to play grabbed its first advantage of the contest on a pair free-throw attempts by Jordan. The Decatur, Ala., native tied the contest at 52-all on a layup just prior to the shots from the charity stripe.
UWA wouldn't relinquish the lead the remainder of the contest grabbing its largest lead, 63-57, on two free throws from
Synthea Reed.
Davia Harris led UM with 18 points while Shavonne Seymore and Teanna Boxley each chimed in 10 points each in the loss.
West Alabama opens conference play on Thursday, Jan. 5 against Alabama-Huntsville at Pruitt Hall. Tip against the Blue and White is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
