LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Despite falling 67-60 in its regular season finale, the University of West Alabama women's basketball team clinched the East Division, No.3-seed in the Gulf South Conference Tournament. The Tigers (18-8, 6-6 GSC) will face West Division, No. 2-seed Delta State on Thursday, Mar. 3. The game time will be determined at a later date.
UWA – which makes its sixth straight appearance to the conference tournament and seventh of the last eight – will match up against the Lady Statesmen for the second consecutive time in the GSC Tournament.
The contest in the conference tournament marks the second meeting this season between the two squads as the Tigers fell 58-56 to Delta State in heartbreaking fashion on Dec. 2, for the Red and White's first setback of the season.
Latashia Greer led the Tigers in the impressive effort against then-top ranked DSU with 17 points on the night. LaShandra McCoy and Mystee Dale each added 15 points.
In the setback Saturday to VSU, Dale paced the Red and White in scoring with 18 while McCoy added 17 points.
Alexis Hewitt led the Tigers on the glass with five rebounds.
The Blazers – who trailed 37-34 at the half - opened the second stanza on a 15-3 run to take a 49-40 lead through the first nine and a half minutes. After VSU had extended its lead to 10 - its largest of the game – the Tigers pulled within 58-54 behind a 10-4 run. The Red and Black quickly pushed the lead back to nine before claiming the 67-60 victory.
West Alabama shot 46 percent from the field in the losing effort while the Lady Blazers connected on 48 percent of its shots.
