Willis, Worsham Power Tigers Over CSU in Strong Offensive Effort




LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
An offensive outpouring led the University of West Alabama football team (2-1) to a 45-7 victory over Central State University. The combination of Matt Willis and Gerald Worsham produced 238 of the Tigers' 531 total yards.

 

Willis – a native of Collins, Miss. – totaled 122 yards on the ground on 12 carries. The junior also posted two TDs in the contest – the first two of the game. Worsham finished the evening with 116 receiving yards on five catches, including one for a score.

 

UWA took the opening possession and marched 59 yards in eight plays to strike first in the contest. Matt Willis – who touched the ball four times on the drive – pushed the ball across the goal line from a yard out. The Tigers took control of their second drive on the CSU 38 yard line and in a quick four plays Willis found the end zone – this time from 19 yards out.

 

Junior quarterback Karl Birkenfeld extended the UWA lead to 21-0 with less than 13 minutes remaining in the half on an 11-yard run – capping a three-play, 52 yard drive. Just over two minutes later, Birkenfeld recorded his first TD toss of the season as he hooked up with Gerald Worsham from 44 yards out. The junior signal caller would later connect with Ken May from 11 yards out for his second TD pass of the game.

 

Leading 35-0 at the intermission, the Red and White added 10 points in the second half. Don Smith added a seven yard TD run in the third quarter with Ryne Smith tacking on the final points with a 25-yard field with just over 4:30 remaining in the outing.

 

Central ended the shutout opportunity as Khalid Ali caught a 10-yard pass from Michael Wilson with 1:53 left in the game.

 

Defensively, UWA held CSU (0-3) to just 248 total yards. A majority of the Marauders offense came on the ground. CSU rushed for 173 yards with Wilson leading the way with 57. The CSU quarterback finished the night completing 5 of 10 passes for 55 yards. CSU starter Jeffrey Brooks completed just 5 of 17 passes for 20 yards.

 

Shontral Ford led the Tigers with seven tackles in the contest followed by Josh Lewis' four stops. Lewis also tallied a sack on the eveing.

 

West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 as the Tigers travel to Arkansas Tech. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
