LIVINGSTON, Ala. – In the team's inaugural Gulf South Conference game, the University of West Alabama women's soccer team (3-3) celebrates Youth Soccer Month Wednesday as the squad welcomes Alabama-Huntsville (1-5) to Tiger Stadium. Kickoff between the Tigers and UAH is slated for 7 p.m.
In an effort to increase awareness of the benefits of playing soccer, Coach
Graeme Orr's team will use Wednesday's game against the Chargers as a way to promote the sport and the advantages of playing it. As part of the celebration, UWA will be giving out hand fans to the first 200 fans in attendance, while also giving away t-shirt prizes throughout the game.
“I have been overwhelmed by the support we have received from our school and the surrounding communities,” said coach Orr. “We hope to have a special night Wednesday and give something back to those who have given so much to us.”
The Tigers enter the contest after a dominating 5-0 victory against Tennessee Temple on Friday. In that match, freshman
Nicki Gears scored the school's first hat trick, accounting for three goals in route to the victory.
Gears leads UWA with 10 shots on goal this season, with three goals scored for a .476 shot-on-goal percentage. Meanwhile,
Sam Cable leads the team with 540 minutes played.
UAH enters the contest with a 1-5 record after winning the opening game of the season over Delta State. Since that time, the Chargers have lost five straight.
Following Wednesday's game, UWA travels to Pensacola, Fla., to take on West Florida on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
