ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – In the final test before conference play, the University of West Alabama volleyball team (9-3) powered past Henderson State and Lyon Monday, taking each match by a score of 3-0.
UWA opened up the day with another dominating performance against Henderson State. In the second match of the season against the Reddies, the Tigers were just as strong as they were in the first. Coach Tabitha Turner's team rolled past HSU, winning 25-9 in the opening set and 25-19 in the second. The Reddies forced a tiebreaker in the third, but UWA came out victorious once again with a 26-24 victory.
Against the Reddies, the Red and White were led defensively by senior libero
Casey Byrnes, who posted a team-high 16 digs. Meanwhile, junior middle hitter
Chanel Davis continued her strong start to the season, hitting over the .700 mark for the second consecutive game. Davis had a team-high 13 kills in 17 total attacks against HSU.
In the second match of the day, the Tigers once again won three-consecutive games to give them the 3-0 win. In that contest, UWA was led by junior
Tazra Pitts who had 10 kills for a .500 hitting percentage. Drew was also strong in that match, accounting for 10 kills in 24 total attacks.
UWA will now return home to open up Gulf South Conference action this weekend. The Red and White will play West Georgia at 7 p.m. on Friday followed by a 2 p.m. afternoon meeting with Valdosta State on Saturday at Pruitt Hall.
