UWA Volleyball Opens Season with Two Wins

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama volleyball team (2-0) started the season off in an impressive fashion Friday, rolling past Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist on the first day of the Christian Brothers Tournament in Memphis, Tenn.

The Tigers were dominant for most of the morning and afternoon sessions, winning six of the seven sets they played. Coach Tabitha Turner's squad defeated Henderson State 3-0, before ousting Ouachita Baptist by a score of 3-1.

In their first match, the Tigers blanked Henderson State in a strong overall team performance. The Tigers won the first set 25-17, the second at 25-13, and then finally wrapped up the match with a 25-15 win in the third game. In those three sets, UWA never trailed on its way to the first victory of the season.

Statistically against the Reddies, senior Angela Sanders led the team with 12 kills, while junior transfer Chanel Davis put together three block solos to go along with two block assists.

With the first win of the year in hand, the Red and White went to the afternoon session against Ouachita Baptist looking to start the season with a 2-0 record for the fourth time out of the past five years.

UWA was able to accomplish that feat, after holding off a strong push from the opposing Tigers. On the back of senior Alexis McHale's 46 assists and senior Angela Sanders' 21 kills, UWA dominated the third and fourth sets, taking them 25-13 and 25-16 to seal up the team's second win of the day.

The Red and White will be back in action tomorrow morning, playing the first of two matches. The 2-0 Tigers look to move their record to 4-0 for the first time since the 2007 season, as the team faces American International College at 9 a.m. followed by an 11 a.m. contest with Arkansas-Monticello.
