Sanders Leads Tigers in 3-1 Win Against VSU; Squad Now 2-0 in Conference Play

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – A total of 18 kills from senior Angela Sanders, along with an impressive effort from sophomore Jennifer Campbell, helped guide the University of West Alabama volleyball team (11-3, 2-0 GSC) to a 3-1 win over Gulf South Conference foe Valdosta State Saturday, completing the weekend sweep for the Tigers.

With the victory, UWA moves to 2-0 in GSC play this year after two strong performances against West Georgia Friday night and Valdosta State on Saturday.

“I think we are playing really good volleyball right now, “said the victorious head coach Tabitha Turner. “I think we overcame some hurdles after our poor weekend in Dallas, and I think we come in and work hard in practice every day because we want to get better. Like I said before, we have something to prove in the Gulf South Conference and I think we are proving it.”

The Tigers did prove themselves against the Blazers, coming in and taking a tight first game. The two teams went back and forth in the initial set, as the squads traded points throughout. The Tigers found themselves down 20-16, looking for a big play.

UWA got just that from junior middle hitter Tazra Pitts who had a kill off of the assist from senior Alexis McHale. From that point on, the teams continued to battle until Hilary Lobenstein picked up the decisive kill to put the final of the first game at 30-28 in the Tigers' favor.

With one game in hand, the Red and White faced a fierce comeback from the Blazers, as Valdosta State won the first five points in the second and eventually went on to win, 25-19, in that set.

From there, points continued to be hard to come by as both teams put on a determined effort. In the third, UWA once again went back and forth with the Blazers, with the largest margin that any team could gain standing at three points.

The Tigers continued to persevere, however, and eventually took two games in a row against VSU by a score of 26-24 in the third and 25-23 in the fourth to pick up the team's fifth win in a row this season.

Sanders paced the Red and White with her 18 total kills, while Campbell added 11 to that total. Meanwhile, the Blazers were led by Katie Onushko, who had 19 kills in the match.

West Alabama now hits the road, heading to Huntsville, Ala., where the team will face Alabama-Huntsville at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The Tigers will not return to Pruitt Hall until the squad faces UAH on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
