UWA Puts Six-Match Win Streak to the Test in Pair of Road Contests

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Fresh off a thrilling five-game match against Alabama-Huntsville Tuesday, the University of West Alabama volleyball team (12-3, 3-0 GSC) hits the road once again, traveling to Pensacola, Fla., and New Orleans, La., for a pair of weekend contests.

The Tigers face off with Gulf South Conference foe West Florida on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by a match against New Orleans on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Head Coach Tabitha Turner's squad has had an impressive run through the month of September, going on two win streaks of five matches or more. On the current streak, UWA has won six in a row, including three-straight in conference, dating back to Sept. 13.

The Tigers are led offensively by senior Angela Sanders who has posted 192 kills and a .317 hitting percentage so far this season. Meanwhile, senior Alexis McHale has accounted for 588 assists this year, playing in every set.

Defensively, GSC Defensive Player of the Week Casey Byrnes leads UWA with 201 digs, averaging over five digs per set. Junior middle hitter Chanel Davis leads the squad with 45 total blocks, including 15 block solos.

On Friday, the Tigers face an Argos team that has been on a win streak of its own, winning five-straight. UWF is coming off two victories this past weekend over Christian Brothers and North Alabama. The Argos have also been dominant at home this season, holding a perfect 3-0 record in Pensacola, Fla.

Saturday's contest against New Orleans features a Privateers squad that has struggled in the 2011 season. UNO is 2-8 on the year and coming off a road loss at Christian Brothers.

Following the pair of weekend contests, UWA stays on the road as the team travels to Montevallo, Ala., to take on the Falcons on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
