UWA Hoops Travels to CBU, DSU for First Conference Roadtrip

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Fresh off a victory over North Alabama, the University of West Alabama women's basketball team returns to the hardwood this week for a pair of road contests. The Tigers open the road swing on Thursday, Jan. 12 with a 5 p.m. outing at Christian Brothers. After Thursday clash, the Red and White will travel to Cleveland, Miss., to battle Delta State at 4 p.m. The game can be heard on ESPN 104.9 FM.

UWA has posted a posted a 5-1 record in its last six contests. During the span, the Red and White have outscored its opponents by 50 points and hold a plus-24 advantage on the boards. The duo of Brittany Weathers and Nikkia Jordan has led the team in scoring with 13.2 and 11.7 points respectively. Weathers, a Hattiesburg, Miss., native has averaged a double-double during the stretch hauling down 10 boards per game.

On the season Weathers is averaging 15.2 points per contest while Jordan has added 10.8 – both marks rank among the leaders in the Gulf South Conference.

In the win over UNA, the team shot a season-high 47.5 percent from the field en route to the 70-63 decision. The Tigers also converted on 21 second chance points, besting the Lions (8-5) by 12 in the category and snapping a four-game losing skid to the Lions – giving the Red and White its first win in the series since Feb. 14, 2009.

Jasmine Ellis leads a CBU squad that is averaging 50 points per game. The senior is averaging 9.9 points per game and is seventh in the conference with 7.7 rebounds a contest, which is second for the Lady Bucs behind Amber Williams' 7.9 boards. CBU is currently riding a three-game skid and looking for its first win of 2012. The Black and Red's last victory came on Dec. 17 in a 67-61 outcome against Blue Mountain.

DSU's Veronica Walker leads the GSC in scoring with 19.3 points and is third on the glass with 8.9 per outing. The Lady Statesmen have two of the top six scorers in the conference as Brooke Rhoades joins Walker in double figures with an average 14.4. After having its season-long, three-game win streak ended at Valdosta State, the Green and White picked up a 52-41 decision at West Florida to enter the weekend's action with a victory.

Following this weekend, next up for West Alabama will be a Thursday tilt against Valdosta State. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The game can be heard on ESPN 104.9 FM and www.uwaathletics.com.
