Tigers Claim 67-59 Overtime Win at Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. – A strong overtime performance lead the University of West Alabama women's basketball team to a 67-59 win at Valdosta State on Thursday evening. The decision gives the Tigers their third Gulf South Conference victory out of the last four outings and their fourth conference triumph this season.

UWA (9-14, 4-8 GSC) posted a dominating effort in the paint as the Red and White nearly doubled up the Lady Blazers (18-6, 8-4 GSC) at 30-16. The Tigers also received a great effort from the bench with a 35-9 advantage over VSU.

Kenyatta Epps paced a quartet of Tigers in double figures with 16 points on the night. Jamie Gunter added 14 with 11 coming from Nikkia Jordan. Brittany Weathers tabbed in 13 points, including a three-pointer with 14 seconds left in the second half to force the extra period.

Synthea Reed led the Red and White on the glass with eight of the Tigers' 46 rebounds. UWA used a plus-11 advantage on the boards to record 16 second chance points for the Red and White – 15 more than the Red and Black.

Following Weathers' trey in the closing seconds of the second 20 minutes, UWA outscored the Lady Blazers 14-6 - never trailing in the extra five minutes.

VSU held a 26-21 edge at the intermission and led much of the second half, but with the Tigers fought back into the contest and grabbed its first lead of the second half with 10:18 remaining on a Gunter basket. UWA held the advantage over the next three minutes before VSU regained the lead.

The two squads wrestled over the lead for the remainder of the half with the Red and Black claiming it most of the time prior to Weathers' three-pointer.

Brittany Ferguson posted a double-double in the loss with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Sczeny Hartry added 14 points for VSU.

West Alabama returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 19 as the Tigers host West Florida on Senior Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
